What should I actually let an AI remember about me?

Assistant response

Useful memory captures stable preferences that save repeated explanation: your preferred writing length, accessibility needs you choose to disclose, or the units you usually use. It becomes less useful when temporary circumstances turn into permanent assumptions. “I am shopping for a beginner camera” should not quietly become “I am always a beginner photographer.”

Think in terms of benefit and replacement cost. Remembering that you prefer metric measurements is easy to correct and broadly useful. Remembering a sensitive family conflict or a detailed financial situation has a different risk profile, and its usefulness may expire quickly. You can often obtain the same assistance by supplying limited context only when needed.

Memory can also create a feedback loop. If an assistant repeatedly recommends the same type of book because of one old conversation, you may stop seeing alternatives without noticing why. Ask it to distinguish your explicit preferences from its guesses, and invite occasional recommendations that challenge rather than merely reinforce the remembered pattern.

The available controls depend on the product, account, and current settings, so inspect that product's memory and data documentation before relying on a specific feature. The practical principle remains stable: store the smallest reusable preference that improves the answer, and keep changing or sensitive context within the conversation where it is relevant.

Put it to the test

Manual
⌁User prompt

How do I audit its memory without sharing more personal data?

Assistant response

Start with a neutral request asking the assistant to list the preferences it is using for the current answer, separating explicit instructions from inferred assumptions. Do not ask it to prove its memory by repeating secrets. You want a map of the personalization affecting the response, not another copy of private information.

Review each item for accuracy, usefulness, and expiry. A preference such as “use concise explanations” may still fit, while “planning a move” may no longer apply. Mark items as keep, correct, or remove, then use the product's actual memory controls to make changes instead of assuming that a conversational acknowledgment guarantees deletion everywhere.

Test the result with an ordinary task, such as asking for a reading plan in your preferred format. Look for the intended personalization and for old assumptions that still influence the answer. If something persists, inspect whether it comes from the current conversation, a saved instruction, or a separate memory feature before repeating corrections.

Schedule a light review after a major life or work change rather than creating an elaborate monthly bureaucracy. A short preference profile can be useful precisely because it stays small and understandable. If you cannot explain why a remembered item improves your experience, that is a good candidate to remove or provide only when needed.
