How do I use AI for original ideas instead of familiar mashups?
AI brainstorming often begins with recognizable patterns because recognizable patterns are easy to describe. Asking for “ten unique ideas” does not supply a reason for any idea to differ. Give the system an unusual constraint, a specific audience tension, or a detail from your own observations that generic prompts would not contain.
Originality does not require every ingredient to be new. A familiar format can become distinctive when it serves a neglected situation or combines elements for a clear purpose. The important question is what the combination makes possible, not whether the pitch contains two fashionable nouns connected by the word “meets.”
Use the assistant to expose defaults before generating alternatives. Ask what most versions of the idea would assume about the setting, protagonist, customer, or outcome. Then deliberately change one assumption and follow the consequences. Changing several at once can produce novelty without coherence, which is harder to develop into useful work.
Keep a human selection standard. An idea should matter to someone, fit its constraints, and contain enough tension to sustain execution. Save promising fragments, but reject novelty that exists only in the title. The strongest result usually becomes more specific as you develop it, rather than accumulating more unrelated features.
What would a genuinely distinctive concept look like?
Imagine a newsletter about local history. The default version summarizes a landmark every week, which is workable but familiar. Change the starting point: each issue begins with an object that residents pass daily, such as a drain cover, a bus-stop name, or a patched section of pavement, then investigates the decisions behind it.
The distinctive mechanism is scale. A small visible object opens into a larger story about work, migration, infrastructure, or neighborhood change. Readers can encounter the object themselves, compare it with an old photograph, and contribute questions. The format creates a repeatable editorial process instead of relying on an endless supply of spectacular revelations.
An AI assistant could help generate research questions, organize interview notes, and identify gaps in the draft. It should not invent archival discoveries or quotations to make an issue more dramatic. Keep a source log and mark unresolved details, because the concept's appeal depends on showing how ordinary surroundings connect to verifiable history.
Prototype one issue before designing the whole publication. Choose an object with accessible evidence, write a short opening scene, and explain one consequential change. If readers become curious about the place they already know, the concept is working; if they only admire the clever premise, strengthen the actual investigation before expanding it.
