Can I tell whether a viral video is AI-generated?

Assistant response

Sometimes visible defects provide clues, but a clean-looking video is not proof of authenticity. Compression, editing, dubbing, and ordinary camera artifacts can also look strange. The more useful question is whether the clip's origin and claimed context can be established, because an authentic recording with a false caption can mislead just as effectively.

Begin with the exact claim being made: who supposedly appears, where the event happened, and when it occurred. A clip described as today's announcement may be an older interview, even if every frame is genuine. Checking the claim separately from the media prevents the investigation from collapsing into an unreliable guessing game about visual quality.

Technical signals can help, but their meaning is limited. NIST's review of synthetic-content transparency examines provenance, labeling, and detection as different approaches. A provenance record can describe a file's history without proving every assertion in its caption, while missing metadata does not establish that the media is fake.

For everyday decisions, use a confidence ladder: verified origin and context, partially corroborated, or unverified. This is more honest than forcing every clip into “real” or “AI.” If the only available evidence is a reposted fragment and several accounts repeating it, the appropriate conclusion may simply be that the claim is not established.

Put it to the test

What should I check before sharing a suspicious clip?

Assistant response

Save the public link and write down the caption's factual claim before you start searching. Look for the earliest accessible upload, a longer recording, and an identifiable publisher with direct access to the event. Reposts can preserve the same visual material while adding a new and unsupported interpretation around it.

Search a distinctive spoken phrase in quotation marks and compare still frames with other publicly available versions. You are looking for context such as an earlier date, a cropped speaker, or a missing qualification. A successful check often discovers a misleading edit rather than proving that the entire video was generated.

Seek confirmation through an independent channel appropriate to the claim. An alleged company announcement should appear in that company's official communications; a purported public speech may have a full recording from the organizer. Several accounts copying one anonymous post count as one source chain, even if their follower counts are impressive.

If you still cannot establish the claim, do not forward it as fact with a tiny caveat attached. Share the verification question only when there is a useful reason, and explain what is missing. The strongest outcome is sometimes a short message saying that the clip's origin remains unverified and a conclusion would be premature.
