⌁User prompt

Is running AI on my laptop actually more private?

Assistant response

Running a model locally can keep a particular inference task on your device, but the word “local” does not describe every part of an application. Updates, crash reports, connected search, extensions, and account features may still communicate externally. Privacy depends on the complete workflow and its settings, not just where the model weights reside.

Distinguish the model from the surrounding software. A local model used through an application with a cloud transcription service may send the audio away before the model ever sees text. Likewise, a browser extension can create a separate data path. Draw the route from input to output before assuming that a local label covers everything.

There are practical tradeoffs too: hardware requirements, response speed, model capability, setup effort, and maintenance. A device that handles short drafting comfortably may struggle with long documents. If the inconvenience pushes you to paste the same sensitive material into a different service, the theoretical privacy advantage has not translated into a better routine.

A sensible starting point is to classify tasks rather than choose a permanent team. Generic brainstorming, private document summarization, and public web research have different requirements. You may use different tools for each, provided you understand their data paths and can recognize when a task crosses the boundary you intended to maintain.

Step 2

Put it to the test

Manual
⌁User prompt

How should I choose between local and cloud AI?

Assistant response

Choose three representative tasks and remove sensitive details before testing. For example, compare a short rewrite, a summary of a sample document, and a reasoning problem with a known answer. Use the same inputs, record the time required, and judge the result against criteria that matter to your work rather than a broad popularity ranking.

For the local option, inspect whether the application works with networking disabled and what features stop working. This is a useful practical check, though it does not replace reviewing software behavior and documentation. For a cloud option, inspect current retention, training, sharing, and account controls relevant to your plan instead of assuming all accounts work alike.

Include operating costs that are easy to forget: installation time, storage, battery use, updates, and the effort of checking weak answers. A free model can still be expensive in attention. Conversely, a paid service may offer little value if your only task is a simple transformation that your own device handles well.

Make the decision narrow and reversible: choose one tool for one task class for two weeks, with a clear rule about what data may enter it. Review quality and friction afterward. This produces a practical workflow you can revise when capabilities change, without treating privacy or model quality as a permanent binary choice.
