MCP Gives AI Tools—Who Gives It Permission?
Does connecting an MCP server make an AI agent safe to use? A worked guide to the hidden tradeoffs, practical checks, and implementation decisions.
Does connecting an MCP server make an AI agent safe to use? A worked guide to the hidden tradeoffs, practical checks, and implementation decisions.
Use the current MCP security documentation for implementation details and version-specific guidance. The durable design principle is to grant only the capabilities a workflow needs, make consequential actions understandable, and preserve a record of what was requested and what actually happened.
What should I review before enabling a new tool server?
Inventory the server's operations in plain language before enabling it. Distinguish reading a calendar from editing it, listing files from downloading them, and drafting a message from sending it. A single friendly server name can cover actions with very different consequences, so review the actual tools and their permission scopes.
Test a harmless read operation with a dedicated development account and inspect the returned data. Confirm that the server cannot access a different workspace or organization merely because an identifier is supplied. Also check what it logs, how credentials are stored, and how access can be revoked when the integration is no longer needed.
Exercise a failure scenario: an expired credential, an unavailable service, and content that tries to redirect the agent into an unrelated action. The desired outcome is a clear, contained failure. An integration that silently broadens its permissions or improvises an alternative destination during an error needs a different design.
Document an operational boundary that a colleague can understand: allowed resources, permitted actions, approval points, and the person responsible for revocation. Revisit it when tools are added or scopes change. A server that was appropriate for reading project notes may require a fresh review when it gains the ability to publish them.
