Assistant response

Instrumental value means something is useful for another goal; intrinsic value concerns what is worthwhile in the experience itself. Many activities have both. A walk can support health and also be enjoyable, but treating enjoyment as legitimate only when it produces another benefit can narrow how you understand a good life.

Optimization requires a target, and choosing that target is already a value judgment. A schedule optimized for output may sacrifice friendship, spontaneity, or rest because those goods are harder to measure. The efficiency of the system does not establish that it is pursuing the right mixture of things.

This is not an argument against responsibility or improvement. Resources are limited, and obligations matter. The question is whether every unstructured moment must defend itself through future productivity, even after necessary commitments are met. A life can include deliberate effort without making all pleasure answer to an external performance standard.

Consider what your metrics leave out. A conversation may matter because of shared presence, not the number of insights produced. A hobby may be valuable without mastery. Naming those goods makes it easier to allocate time honestly rather than inventing a productivity explanation for experiences you already find worthwhile.

Can we defend doing something simply because we enjoy it?

Assistant response

Imagine two afternoons spent drawing. In the first, the person enjoys experimenting without showing the result; in the second, they produce portfolio work for a career goal. Both can be valuable, but for different reasons. The second does not automatically invalidate the first by having a more measurable outcome.

Now add a real obligation that must be completed that day. The value of drawing does not erase the obligation, but neither does the obligation prove that drawing has no value. The practical judgment concerns timing and proportion rather than a universal rule that only productive activities deserve space.

Describe one activity you enjoy without translating it into self-improvement language. Notice whether the explanation feels uncomfortably incomplete and ask why. You may discover an assumption that pleasure requires permission from achievement, even when the activity harms nobody and fits within your responsibilities.

Choose a modest amount of time for the activity and let its purpose remain what you named. Reflect on whether the experience matters without demanding a quantified result. The exercise does not settle every theory of wellbeing, but it makes your own values more visible than a schedule organized entirely around measurable gains.
