⌁User prompt

Why is my small AI app generating such a large bill?

Assistant response

An AI feature's cost is usually a workflow property, not just a model price. Long conversation histories, repeated document uploads, retries, tool loops, and background tasks can multiply usage. A short answer may still require a large input, so the length visible to the user is an unreliable guide to the bill.

Trace one user action from start to finish. A request to summarize a document might trigger extraction, classification, retrieval, drafting, and a second quality check. If each stage receives the entire document or repeats earlier work, the application pays for duplicated context without necessarily improving the final result.

Measure cost per successful task rather than per request alone. A cheaper request that fails repeatedly can cost more overall, and a slow answer can generate duplicate clicks. Include latency, completion rate, retry count, and user-visible quality in the same view so an apparent saving does not conceal a broken experience.

Use current provider pricing and your actual usage records for calculations, since model names, rates, and billing rules change. For planning, construct a transparent hypothetical example with input volume, output volume, and requests per task. Avoid presenting a universal monthly estimate when the application's traffic and workflow are still unknown.

Build a practical check

Manual
⌁User prompt

How can I reduce costs without making answers worse?

Assistant response

Start with an instrumented sample of representative tasks, recording model, input size, output size, duration, retries, and outcome. Remove sensitive prompt contents from routine logs where possible. The first useful chart often shows a small number of unusually expensive paths rather than an evenly distributed problem across the whole application.

Reduce unnecessary context before changing the model. Send the relevant document sections, preserve a compact task state, and avoid appending repeated instructions or tool output indefinitely. Check that trimming does not remove the evidence needed for the answer; a smaller prompt that causes unsupported conclusions is an expensive quality regression.

Then compare alternatives on a fixed evaluation set. A simpler model may handle classification well while a more capable one remains useful for difficult synthesis. Route by task requirements and observed failures, not by a blanket assumption that every request needs the strongest available model or the cheapest available option.

Finally, add explicit limits for retries, tool iterations, and maximum task spend, with a clear user-facing outcome when a limit is reached. Review the cost per successful task again after the change. Keep the optimization only if it improves the overall result, including reliability and the amount of manual correction your users need.
